Frequently Asked Questions
What makes 440C steel better than regular stainless steel?
440C is a high-carbon chromium steel with a Rockwell hardness of 58-60 HRC. It holds a sharper edge for longer, resists corrosion, and maintains precision through thousands of cuts. Regular stainless steel (420J2) dulls faster and can't achieve the same razor-sharp convex edge. For professional hairdressers cutting all day, the difference is night and day.
What size scissors should I buy for barbering?
Barbers typically use 6"–7" scissors. 6" is versatile for scissor-over-comb and general cutting. 6.5" gives more blade length for longer sections. 7" is best for heavy scissor-over-comb work on men's hair. Our 7" range starts at £34.99 for stainless steel and goes up to £119.99 for premium Black Cobalt.
What are thinning scissors used for?
Thinning scissors (also called texturising shears) have teeth on one or both blades that remove bulk without changing the overall length. They're used to blend layers, reduce thickness in heavy hair, soften blunt lines, and add texture. 30-35 teeth is standard — fewer teeth removes more hair per cut. We stock thinning scissors from £69.99 to £149.99.
What's the difference between convex and bevelled edge?
Convex (or hamaguri) edges are razor-sharp, hollow-ground for effortless slide cutting and clean lines — the choice of professional Japanese scissors. Bevelled edges are more durable but less precise, better suited to student scissors. All Kobaruto professional ranges (PFX, Rebel, Black/Blue Cobalt, Artistic) use convex edges. Our Student range uses micro serrated edges for extra grip during training.
Are Kobaruto scissors suitable for NVQ training?
Yes. Our Student 5" Micro Serrated (£39.99) and Professional Barber Scissors (£14.99) are ideal for NVQ Levels 1-3. The micro serrated edge provides extra grip for learners, and the Japanese steel means they won't dull halfway through your course.
Do you offer left-handed scissors?
Our current Kobaruto range is right-handed. For left-handed stylists, the offset handle design on the Rebel, PFX, and Cobalt ranges is ergonomically comfortable for extended use. Contact us if you need specific left-handed recommendations.
How do I care for my scissors?
Clean blades after each client with a soft cloth. Apply a drop of scissor oil to the pivot point daily. Store in a protective case (£9.99) when not in use. Never cut anything other than hair — paper and foil will dull the edge. Have them professionally sharpened every 6-12 months depending on usage.
