5 tips for a successful wash day routine

If washing your hair is the least favourite part of your natural hair routine, you are not alone. A lot of women dread all the breakage and manipulation associated with washing natural hair. To be honest, wash day can be stressful if you are not well prepared. Here are a few tips that will get you looking forward to washing and taking care of your hair.

Detangle first

If you proceed to wash your hair while it still has knots and tangles, it will only get worse. The first thing you should do is detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush. You can also use a detangling conditioner to make it easier for you.

Hydrate using water

Hydration is key to healthy hair, especially for afro hair. For great hydration, let the water run through your hair first before adding any products. Doing this will help you use less product and give you a more defined curl.

Use a clarifying shampoo

Contrary to popular belief, afro hair doesn’t need heavy and thick shampoos. A clarifying shampoo is great for natural hair because it prevents product build-up and thoroughly cleanses your hair. Build-up from oils and other products makes it harder for you to moisturise your hair, and these shampoos are the best way to get rid of it.

Always deep condition

The role of a conditioner is to lock in the moisture after shampooing. Deep conditioners soften and strengthen your hair by smoothing the cuticles of your hair strands. Use a steamer when deep conditioning to help the product penetrate deeper into the hair strands. This will also reduce the amount of time you have the product on.

Work in sections

Sectioning your hair helps you concentrate on a small portion of your hair at a time. Start with four sections or more, depending on your hair’s volume. Before you start styling, detangle your hair again, and then add your products. Give each section an equal amount of tender love and care, ensure that the product is evenly distributed, and finally, style to your desired protective style.
